Koh Lanta, an archipelago with more than 50 islands

One of the most endearing islands in the Andamans, Koh Lanta is just a short ferry ride (two hours) from Krabi's shore and close to Phuket and Phi Phi Island. It actually belongs to an archipelago, whose two largest islands are known as Koh Lanta Noi and Koh Lanta Yai (i.e. small and large island of Lanta). It is in the Krabi province and is undoubtedly the Thai beachfront location with the most striking visual impact. It is littered with seaside pearls. A labyrinth of archipelagos, islands that seem to rise up out of the water, and remote beaches that can only be reached by the recognizable long-tailed boats characterize this otherworldly province.

An island with a history of merchants and pirates

Numerous bays and inlets in the province have long served as havens for sea gypsies, traders, and pirates. The island of Lanta is absolutely amazing. The weather is typical for the region, with the impact of the summer monsoon present from May to October and almost constant sunshine during the remaining months. In contrast to the Krabi coast's and neighboring islands' rough karst formations, Koh Lanta is long and narrow and has a relatively flat region. Simple fishing towns, modest wats (temples), and kiosks serving fried chicken in the shade of slender minarets may all be seen on a quick tour of the island, which is a lovely melting pot of cultures. Saladan, in the north, is the primary ferry dock for ferries arriving from Phi Phi Island, Krabi, and Phuket.

Enjoy breathtaking views while riding a scooter

The trek to the island starts in the traditional Thai fishing village of Baan Saladan. To go snorkeling or simply plunge into the pristine seas, it is simple to rent boats. There are numerous scooter and motorcycle rental locations as well as diving centers. To reach the southernmost point of the island from Baan Saladan, you must drive for around 30 kilometers (a travel of about an hour). The journey will come to an end in front of the Lanta National Park marine office, which is where the island's lighthouse is located.

Driving requires some attention because the road is only paved in one direction, but occasionally the scenery is breathtaking from both sides! Koh Lanta is a natural wonderland with a variety of fascinating features, both from a purely seashore perspective and from a naturalistic and geological perspective.

In fact, in addition to the beaches, other areas of the island, such as the rainforest with its karst caverns or the Sea Gypsies village's cultural experience, can provide strong feelings. A visit to this jewel of the Andaman Sea is definitely one-of-a-kind thanks to the rubber plantations, the water with all of its hues and depths, and the great selection of fish and shellfish.

Koh Lanta beaches

There are many beaches in Koh Lanta, and the area offers wonderful swimming in warm, clear waters. Each has its own peculiarities but all along the western side of Lanta Yai Island are where you'll see the greatest sunsets. The mountains nearby the eastern shore are entirely covered with tropical forest, which is highly diverse. The west coast of Lanta is home to all of the primary beaches.

Khlong Dao is a three-kilometer-long stretch of white sand. It was the first beach to gain notoriety for its magnificent sunsets and in particular for its fine white sand. Due to its size and lack of crowding, it is perfect for swimming and for families with young children. It is also simple to locate quiet areas to unwind.

How to get there

The public ferry, which runs between November and May, is the least expensive way to travel between Koh Lanta, Krabi, Phi Phi Island, Lipe, and Phuket.

What to eat

The typical Thai food, which is anything but fatty and heavy given that the major ingredients of the recipes are primarily meat, fish, veggies, and rice, is a must-try for individuals who enjoy spicy flavors and loads of spices while on Koh Lanta. Noodles, also known as rice spaghetti, are a common dish in Thai cuisine. They are served in extremely light broths that are created with chicken, fish, and vegetables and are made even more remarkable by the addition of very aromatic spices

You must try the restaurant Malina's Kitchen (43 Sala Dan) if you want to experience something even more unique than dining at the stalls, which still provide delicious food. This is a restaurant that serves truly traditional Thai cuisine (prepared by Malina), and it is run in the front of the house by a charming Englishman named Dan. Dan has a great sense of humor and will keep you smiling as you unwind and enjoy the food that Malina prepares to absolute perfection.

You must order at least one "Yum Talay" if you wish to try the local fish. Yum Talay is a spicy seafood salad. Yum is a fusion of hot and sour flavors. Talay denotes the sea. The quality of the items used determines how delicious this recipe for spicy seafood salad will taste.

Thailand's cuisine features a wide variety of seafood dishes as a result of its proximity to the sea and long coasts. A dish that is quick to make, simple to make, aesthetically pleasing, healthful, and even better when you combine two or more types of seafood. Tamarind concentrate, chili paste in soybean oil, and tamarind juice are three essential components of the dressing. Fish sauce is used to balance the saltiness. Any type of fish can be used in this seafood salad.

Shellfish, scampi, prawns, barracuda, and other species of fish are frequently steamed, grilled, or fried for those who spend their holidays on Koh Lanta. The Thai beers Singha Beer and Tiger are among the most well-liked alcoholic beverages. Try the lassi with mango or banana during the day to cool off or while you're eating. It's a cold, hydrating beverage made with fresh fruit, milk, yogurt, sugar, and spices.
